Our Story

As companies throughout the world have evolved, so has Safety Products Global. Starting over 70 years ago with the invention of the original Handy Cutter, Safety Products Global has continued to lead the industry in uncovering cutting challenges across industries to drive proprietary safety technologies, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability in safety knives and tools.

The idea
1950

In 1950, Herbert Lightburn recognized the need for a low-cost cutting tool that could open shipping cartons more efficiently and safely than a handheld razor blade. To meet this need, Lightburn designed the original Handy Cutter, which standardized the way in which grocery chains opened packaged goods and quickly emerged as the preferred cutting tool for stockrooms and shipping departments across the US.

Acquisition of Klever
2019

Expanded the Safety Products Global product portfolio to include a robust selection of concealed safety cutters with patented technologies, designed to remove the exposed blade hazard to reduce employee lacerations and product damage. The acquisition amplified our USA manufacturing capabilities and engineering expertise.

NEW START
2020

To build the foundation for future growth, significant capital investments were made to upgrade the manufacturing capabilities and equipment in our California and Michigan operations, as well as to structural facility expansions and increased resources to strengthen our distribution, sales, and marketing support across the globe.

ACQUISITION OF SLICE
2021

Slice expanded the Safety Products Global safety knife portfolio to offer companies with a new level of blade safety.  Founded by TJ Scimone in 2008, Slice was established by collaborating with renowned designers to reimagine everyday cutting tools, making them safer and easier to use. Combined with ergonomic handle designs and advanced ceramic finger-friendly® blades, Slice offers over 50 different tools, each masterfully designed to meet unique applications and specialized environments.

FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY
2024

To reduce the use of virgin plastic and divert plastic waste from landfills, Safety Products Global launches a series of eco-friendly, recycled plastic safety cutters and the  weRecycle™ safety cutter recycling program. Safety Products Global sustainability programs offer companies an easy and reoccurring way to contribute to their ESG and sustainability goals.
